Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health threat, with Nigeria ranking among the top 10 high-burden countries worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), despite the availability of effective diagnostic tools and treatment regimens, TB continues to claim thousands of lives annually due to delayed diagnosis, poor treatment adherence, and low levels of awareness. In Benue State, where poverty, malnutrition, and crowded living conditions contribute to high TB transmission rates, understanding awareness and prevention practices is critical to improving health outcomes and achieving national TB control targets.
Public health experts emphasize that increasing community awareness about TB symptoms, transmission, and treatment is a cornerstone of prevention. Yet, in many rural communities in Benue State, knowledge about the disease remains limited, and stigma surrounding TB often prevents individuals from seeking timely diagnosis and care. This gap in awareness and preventive practices not only fuels the spread of the disease but also undermines Nigeria’s national strategic plan for TB elimination.
Despite government efforts, including the implementation of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP) and the expansion of Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course (DOTS) centers, TB incidence in Benue State remains high. This suggests that beyond infrastructure and service delivery, there is a pressing need to assess and address the levels of community awareness and prevention practices. This study aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of tuberculosis awareness and prevention in Benue State, with a view to developing evidence-based strategies that enhance early detection, treatment adherence, and community participation in TB control efforts.
Despite the availability of free TB diagnosis and treatment services in Benue State, the disease continues to spread at an alarming rate. A significant contributor to this problem is the low level of awareness about TB transmission, symptoms, and prevention practices among the general population. Misconceptions, fear of stigma, and delayed health-seeking behavior hinder early detection and successful treatment, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates.
This persistent challenge indicates a critical gap in health communication strategies and public engagement efforts. If not addressed, TB transmission will continue unabated, and Benue State will remain a hotspot for the disease. This study seeks to assess the current levels of TB awareness and prevention practices among residents of Benue State, identifying barriers to effective TB control and proposing actionable solutions to enhance public health outcomes.
This study focuses on communities in Benue State, assessing their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding tuberculosis awareness and prevention. Limitations may include self-reported bias in assessing prevention practices and difficulties reaching remote or underserved populations.
